The brief

The Broadmeadows Leisure Centre Redevelopment involves a new 50-metre pool and internal remodelling to create a new entrance. The new water space includes a moveable boom to allow the pool to be separated into sections for multipurpose activities. The water filtration system was substantially upgraded and significant improvements made to heating and ventilation equipment to improve environment conditions within the centre. Olsson Fire & Risk was engaged to provide Fire Engineering Services to address Alterative Solutions to the BCA. Notably compartmentation issues, reduction in FRL of load-bearing and non-loadbearing elements, review of protection systems and extended travel distances.

The solution

The architectural intent and operational desires were maintained through the design process, which ensured compliance was maintained. This resulted in a facility that both met the client’s brief and ensured performance was not compromised. As the centre remained fully operational during construction, the project was complex and required the onsite team to be vigilant regarding public safety. This operational environment required consideration of a number of fire life safety issues, including maintenance of protection systems and safe egress.
