The brief

Westfield Warringah Mall (previously known as Warringah Mall) is a large indoor/outdoor shopping centre on Sydney’s Northern Beaches in the suburb of Brookvale, approximately 15 km from the CBD. Its main tenants include David Jones, Myer, Target, Big W, Woolworths, Coles, Rebel Sport, JB HiFi, Dick Smith Powerhouse and Hoyts Cinema, in addition to over 300 independent stores. The shopping centre is now redeveloped into a bigger complex to include more shops and parking.

The solution

Olsson Fire & Risk was engaged to carry out a review of the existing buildings on the site and develop a fire safety strategy for the upgraded parts of the shopping centre. Our involvement in the project enabled flexibility for the design team to combine the existing building with the new developed parts without requiring excessive upgrades of the existing structure. A number of solutions were developed to maximise the lettable area while still providing sufficient means of egress. The smoke exhaust strategy could be rationalised to avoid having to limit the dimensions of smoke reservoirs. Overall the fire safety design enables immense savings for the project, while ensuring that the safety to occupants and provisions for fire brigade intervention are adequate.
